South Chapter Pond Tour

Date: Sunday, July 11, 2010
Time: 1:00 p.m.

Location:Northern Virginia
Details:Thanks to our Northern Virginia Koi Pond owners for this Mid-Atlantic Pond Tour.

1:00 p.m. begins our tour at the Falls Church home and koi pond of MAKC member Lisa Smith.

Lisa's koi pond is approximetly 9,000 gallons and home to 50 koi of varing sizes and varieties. The pond measures 15' x 22' and at it's deepest 51/2'. Harmony Ponds was the builder. We will depart at 1:30 p.m on our way to the Arlington home and koi pond of MAKC member Margie Linn. Arrival time of 2:00 p.m.

Margie's koi pond is located in a Japanese inspired garden. This 4,000 gallon pond is kidney shaped 21' long 10' wide narrowing to 5' then opening to 71/2'. It provides plenty of water for 8 koi and 5 karasu koi looking for a home. Mark Dick (previous member since moved to NY state) built this pond with Harmony Ponds up dating the plumbing system. 2:30 p.m. shows the tour group heading to another home in Arlington. That being the home and koi pond of MAKC member Tony Spadaro. Expected arrival of 2:45 p.m.

Tony's koi pond consists of two ponds with water totaling 8,500 gallons. The main pond is 12' x 12' x 7' deep. The plant bog is 5' x 12' x 21/2' deep. All in all providing home to 28 koi. Departure time is scheduled for 3:15 with the group heading out to the Great Falls home and koi pond of MAKC member Susan Rock. Gathering around the pond at 3:45 p.m.

Susan's koi pond features a formal circular slate rimmed design. Roughly 22' in diameter x 5 1/2' deep with a plant shelf gives us 10,000 gallons of water capacity. Susan say she has an "over population" of 20 adult and 15 juvenile koi. The group can now relax and enjoy some light refreshments and reminisce the days ponds.

By the way, this last home on today's tour is FOR SALE. If your interested, please go to Mid-Atlantic Koi Club to view this and a few other homes with koi ponds FOR SALE.

Central Chapter Meeting

Date: Sunday, August 15, 2010
Time: 2:00 p.m.

Location:Home of Barry & Susan Hixson
Bethlehem, PA
610-262-5184
Details:It has been five years since our pond was redone and sprayed with polyurea elastomer. The 1300 gallon upper pond has a bottom drain and flows to an eighth hp pump to a multiport valve filter with bioballs and then returns to the waterfall. No fish are in this pond, only water lilies. The water flows by a small waterfall to the lower pond which is 5000 gallons. This pond is home to 21 koi ranging in size from 16” to 27”, ages three to 23 years, and 5 shubunkin. Two bottom drains flow to a vortex. The vortex and a box skimmer filter with Matala lead to the Sequence pump. The water then goes to an Aquadyne 2.2 filter and returns to the upper and lower ponds by ways of a 120 watt UV light and a trickle flow bio-filter using kaldnes as the media. Water can also be directed to a 95,000 btu heat exchanger in the basement which helps stabilize the water temperature during the winter and spring. The entire pond and landscaping are enclosed by netting and screening to keep the fish safe from herons.

We have had pond for over 25 years and enjoy all facets of the hobby. Join us to talk koi, plants, landscaping or sit poolside and cool your feet. If the weather is hot, you may relax in the air conditioned sunroom with full view of the ponds. There will be a representative from Strata International present who will give samples and information and on using bacteria (Organic Digester) to enhance the water chemistry of the pond. Bring your questions and enjoy the company of fellow MAKC enthusiasts.

Nisei Koi Farms Main Event Harvest
Date: Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday
October 1 - 4, 2010
Location:Quality Koi Company
104 East Quillytown Rd
Carneys Point, NJ 08069
856-299-7564
Details:Friday Oct 1st - A.M. harvest of the Acre Pond

Saturday Oct 2nd - A.M. harvest of the Oval Pond

Sunday Oct 3rd - A.M. harvest of the Long Pond

Monday Oct 4th - A.M. harvest of Pond 26

Last year we received great feedback on only harvesting one pond a day. Although, we like to get as many ponds pulled while everyone is at the farm, changing to one pond a day allowed Mat more time to talk and answer questions about the koi that were harvested that morning.

IF you have koi in the mud ponds and would like to know what pond your koi is in, please feel free to contact us.

More information on the harvest to come....
