A significant Mid-Atlantic Koi Club project has come to fruition! Not only have all of the articles
which have appeared in the MAKC newsletter/magazine been indexed, all of these articles are now
available in a CD set or on DVD. Everyone involved in this project deserves a big pat on the back.
They are our MAKC Indexing Committee: Allan Hobron, Judy Endsley and Mike Riordan along
with proofreaders, Diana Burton and Dick Roemer. Susan Boland and Wayne Orchard were the driving forces
behind the project to digitize all of the newsletters and magazines.
The completion of this multi-year project serves two purposes. First, it preserves all our newsletters
and magazines as a historical reference. Second – and most importantly – it makes a lot of good
information on koi keeping readily available. Used in conjunction with the MAKC Index, hundreds
of topics are searchable. For instance, more than a dozen articles are available on koi health. Or,
perhaps you have recently read an article by Jim Reilly or Tom Burton or another author; by using
the Index, you can locate other articles they have written. So, what you have before you is an
invaluable reference tool.
Over the past fifteen years, the magazine has become a virtual encyclopedia of information in the form of articles written by
members about their fish, filters, ponds, etc. Authors have included scientists, Koi breeders, dealers, hobbyists,
and many others. In the beginning, some of the information was a bit tentative as we experimented, made mistakes,
and learned. As time went on, the articles became more authoritative and, as a result, more worthwhile as sources
of information for newer members of MAKC. At the same time, the sheer volume of the material made it more and more
difficult to find a particular article.
The index is made up of almost 1,400 entries. These entries have been sorted three ways to provide separte indexes
by category, by date and by author and a topic listing are available here in .pdf format.
One caveat: Like all reference tools, much information is available; some of it will be contradictory and some will be outdated. Koi keeping is not, after all, a science and koi keeping methods are constantly evolving. So, it is your responsibility to sift through all the information and make an informed decision as to what approach is best for your pond and your koi. When in doubt, do not hesitate to contact your fellow MAKC members for their input, especially the members of our MAKC Hotline.
One brief note about using the Index and newsletter/magazine files (see the CD/DVD User Guide for additional information): The front cover and inside front cover of our magazines are not included in the page count. So, page 1 and 2 of the digital files will be these cover pages and page 3 of the digital file is actually page 1 of the magazine. So, for example, when looking for a particular article which begins on page 10 of the magazine, you will actually find that article on page 12 of the digital file.
Lastly, MAKC would like to thank Al Ghiorzi of
for executing the digitizing
project.
